Top Settings For Diamond Studs

Diamonds are arguable the most beloved of all gemstones. It is therefore important to choose a setting that will show off your diamond studs’ dazzling qualities. The setting should hold the diamond studs securely in place and should not distract from the stone. Here are three of the most popular settings for diamond studs:

Crown-Style Setting

The crown-style setting uses a metal (usually gold, white gold, silver or platinum) cup to hold the diamond stud and four prongs to keep it in place. This setting is widely used by has decreased in popularity among jewelers and diamond wearers for a number of reasons: one, the style sets the diamond stud too far away from the ear to be upright, thus leading to a droopy appearance; two, it is made with a high density metal which adds to the unappealing heavy look.

Four-Prong Basket-Style Setting

This setting, as the name suggests, uses four prongs and hoops which cradles the diamond around its circumference, making the diamond stud appear as if it were in a basket. The deeper the diamond is set in the basket, the better it looks because the closeness of the stone in the ear is what gives it an upright appearance. It may be considered inferior to the next setting but it is much easier to find in jewelry boutiques.

Three-Prong Martini Setting

The three-prong martini setting is popular among jewelers because it is considered the best at showing off a diamond. This setting is able to achieve this for two reasons: first, because it uses only three prongs, there is less metal to eclipse the diamond stud; second, the way it positions the diamond firmly against the ear lets it propels it forward for a clean look. Looking at the earring from the side, it takes the V-shape of the martini glass, hence the name.
